ABOUT US
Hello! Our names are Adi & Maxee and we are the owners of DyMax Coco Art Gallery. We met in 2001 in Sumatra, Indonesia (where I was born and raised), and were then married there in my family's village in 2003. DyMax Coco Art Gallery was started in Sumatra in 2002 in my hometown of Bukit Lawang. Bukit Lawang is a small and beautiful town on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, which consists of 100+ kilometers of beautiful jungle and animals. It is also here that there is a rehabilitation center for orangutans--you can even see the orangutans playing along the river when you go for a walk or trek into the jungle!
Indonesia is a beautiful place to live and work, and my wife and I opened up a store in Bukit Lawang where I could sell my handmade coconut shell jewelry. Our store was very small, but it meant the world to me to finally have a place of my own. The number of tourists to Indonesia had been declining since 9/11, but my love for carving coconuts and designing jewelry couldn't stop me from continuing this dream. However, due to illegal logging and natural disaster, there was a flash flood in November 2003 that destroyed all of Bukit Lawang and 300 of my friends and neighbors perished in the flood. Following this disaster, my wife and I decided to move to United States where we have been living in the Chicago land area ever since.
It took me a while to get adjusted to life here in the U.S. but I am now ready to start making my jewelry again and sharing the joy of my artwork with other people. We are hoping to restart this business we once had and hopefully be met with open arms and success in my new hometown. Best wishes and we hope to hear from you all soon! xoxo--Adi & Maxee
